Chocolate Rice Krispie Squares…

This invention was the result of finding a forgotten pack of own brand “Mars” type bars in our kitchen cupboard. We could of course have just eaten them as they were, but I’m never one to let a kitchen opportunity pass me by! Years ago, when the children were small, I would have made various concoctions like tiffin or chocolate cornflake buns if any of their friends were coming to tea and I guess today’s recipe is a more grown up version of those old favourites. Perhaps I’d better warn you though that it’s very moreish……..

You will need:

a square tin, about 20cm x 20cm (or about 8″ x 8″), lined with some greaseproof paper so that the tin isn’t scratched when you cut the finished bars into pieces

a roomy bowl, suitable for microwave use

  • about 230g of “Mars Bar” type bars (I used Aldi own brand, which was a pack of 6 x 38g)
  • 50g of butter
  • 100g of golden syrup
  • 150g of puffed rice
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
  • chocolate of your choice to drizzle on the top – I used 50g each of dark, milk and white chocolate

Method:

This couldn’t be quicker or easier:

  • roughly chop the “Mars Bars”

  •  put the chopped “Mars Bars”, butter and golden syrup into a roomy bowl
  • melt them together in the microwave (at full power) in 30 second bursts, stirring after each (altogether, mine took 4 x 30 seconds to melt)
  • pour the puffed rice and cocoa powder into the melted mixture and mix everything together very well, until the rice is coated
  • tip the mixture into the square tin and press it all down with the back of a spoon and smooth the top
  • put this in the fridge for about 15 minutes to firm up a little
  • melt the chocolate of your choice and either spread or drizzle this over the top of the mixture

  • put it back into the fridge for the chocolate to set (about an hour, if you can resist that long!)
  • when the chocolate is set cut the mixture into about 12 pieces and start eating!

I’m just heading back into the kitchen now to make another batch of this because the one I made yesterday seems to have mysteriously disappeared………
